On the road again, I just can’t wait to get on the road again . . .
It felt like this was indeed our newest theme song as we spent the first 6 hours we were awake on Saturday morning packing up and preparing to leave for California.
We wanted to try and get here in time to spend the last moments, hours, days that Nana Joyce had with her. It seemed so very providential that all the laundry was done (no, really. When does that happen?), the house was darn near clean and it was the weekend. By 3 pm we were off.
By 2 pm Sunday we were in California.
Through the long haul I kept thinking of Willie Nelson and that song. It made me laugh – I had told Nana in January that I was feeling like a gypsy.
“Yeah, well, what’s wrong with that?” She asked wryly. “That’s the stock you’re made of.” I didn’t argue because as the resident genealogist she would know, so I trusted her.
“There are worse things you could be, you know.” Nana smiled and squeezed my hand. Again, I consented it was true. Who could argue with that?
Certainly not me. Or Willie.
On the road again! Like a band of gypsies we go down the highway. We’re the best of friends, insisting that the world keep turning our way . . . and our way.
On the road again. . .
